I went down to City Hall last Monday to visit the LA occupy camp set up there. It was the night that the mayor’s eviction notice was supposed to take effect and the couple hundred people staying in the park would need to pack up and go. Although aimed at clearing the park, the eviction notice gathered in hundred of people filling the park around city hall and ultimately flooding out into the street. The LAPD did indeed show up, in quite large numbers, and I have to say I was quite impressed with how both side handled the whole situation. Neither side was provoking or overstepping bound on what ended up being a pretty tense situation. The violence and disruption that has affected other factions of the OWS movement seemed somewhat anticipated but the police held to their promise that they were there to maintain safety. They even thanked people for protesting over their loudspeaker. It’s kind of a weird situation photographing these kind of things because although you don’t want to see people get hurt, a part of you anticipates and wants action and drama to be able to shoot it. I even had my wrong gear facemask with me in case of any tear gas or pepper spray. In the end, I ended up leaving around 200am because i was starving and had to go occupy my kitchen.
